Why have I signed myself up for so...
Why have I signed myself up for so much work? Why do I split my time between a full-time job, side project, and graduate school?" "" "Simple: It’s helping me achieve my goals. " "" "Since I can remember, I have had lofty goals for myself, some of which I share, some of which I don’t. Some goals are for today; some are for the next 20 years. The loftiest ones stay in my head, nebulous yet ambitious. " "" "What goal is all my work helping me with? Well, several: " "- Have a graduate-level education" "- Diversify my engineering knowledge" "- Reach mastery in as many disciplines as possible" "" "While the “10,000-hour rule” made popular in Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers may not apply to all skills, it’s a useful guiding principle. It’s another form of “practice makes perfect.” Perfect practice makes perfect, though. Practice something the right way, and you will inevitably improve and eventually master that skill through repetition. That’s a big reason for the load I place on myself: it accelerates my path to mastery while simultaneously giving me the diversity of skills I desire. " "" "Setting big goals lets you work backward to put together a plan, and if you want those goals bad enough, it motivates you to carve the time out to execute your plan to achieve your dreams #bendevtip
