After a fantastic honeymoon, #bendevtip is back this week!" "" "As potentially unintuitive as it is, management and IC work seemingly start overlapping more and more as one climbs up the corporate ladder. When I was first starting, I viewed management as an almost dark art that held mysteries I’d hope to one day learn more about. There was such a dichotomy between how my day went as a software engineer and how my manager’s day went, and it felt like that would be the case throughout my career. " "" "After having been a manager for a bit, though, it’s dawned on me just how much overlap there is between the two roles. LinkedIn’s overlap is seemingly most pronounced at the Senior Manager and Senior Staff levels. From what I can tell so far, a Senior Manager’s day to day responsibilities don’t vary that far from a Senior Staff’s day-to-day, with a limited set of very key differences: " "Managers handle all compensation-related questions, decisions, and issues. Managers handle immigration and visa concerns, as well as time-off requests. " "ICs handle all things touching code directly." "" "Everything else, from quarterly planning to sprint planning, strategic decisions, performance reviews, team processes, and culture, are shared responsibilities. " "" "The question is, does this Venn diagram continue to overlap more and more as you move up the ladder, or does it start to diverge again at some point? #bendevtip
