This week I saw a prompt above the...

This week I saw a prompt above the LinkedIn share box asking what lessons I learned from my first job. That was an internship in the Stanford Hospital Department of Radiology IT department when I was 16." "" "I started coding in middle school and immediately knew that software was where I wanted to be. While an IT department is not where I wanted to be long-term, I knew it was an excellent opportunity to get my foot in the door and learn about computer systems in a new way." "" "The most striking lesson was just how seemingly incompetent these highly paid doctors were at using technology. I'll never forget when a doctor came in one day, angrily asking why his computer wasn't working when we could see he had dropped it, leaving a whole side of it bent ~15 degrees. We then asked him where his backup drive was, as we'd need to image a new machine for him with that backup, and he just got angrier because he hadn't followed the department's guidance around backups and was therefore screwed." "" "The thing I've taken from this throughout my career is never to assume technical aptitude from anyone, even if they are in fields and roles where one would expect such know-how. I've continued to be surprised how often essential little habits that should be easy to follow aren't, the biggest being to back up your computer." "" "Maybe I would've learned this on the job anyway, but it's from my first job that I developed proper backup hygiene and have never gone more than a month without backing up my machine since. #CareerKickstart 💼 #bendevtip
