As I start my third week in my...

As I start my third week in my new Search role, it's a good moment to talk time management. Stepping into a new position like the Search tech lead role is time-consuming, let alone with all the other stuff I have going on in my life! " "" "The key for me, though, is to stick to my schedule while simultaneously flexing it a bit to adapt to my new team. For example, over the past couple of years, I've found that leaving my Fridays clear of meetings helps me get focus time I otherwise don't get to work through deep-focus tasks. That said, Search and its partners have seemed more eager to book Friday meetings than I've seen in previous teams, and it's not on me to stop that! " "" "Instead of simply accepting this, I've shifted a piece of my schedule to compensate for this lost focus time. Tuesday through Thursday mornings seem to have fewer meetings than before, so I'm expanding my focus time blocks then in exchange for reducing the amount of focus time I get on Fridays." "" "In the end, time management is all about establishing a schedule that works for you and then holding to it with "just the right" grip. Too tight, and you might miss something important or get feedback that you're being inflexible. Too loose, and it's really easy to burn yourself out. Just like with everything in life, you have to get the balance juuuussttt right.
